Our B Corp Win: Lucky Number 81.7 (Hoot! Hoot!)

Since March 2021, Rebelstork has officially been a Certified B Corporation (B Corp).  We started the long approval process basically right when we launched in 2019 and it took 2 years before we could celebrate such a big win for us last year, but more importantly for you, our FLOCK!

To answer all the questions you have asked, there is no better person to answer them than Emily, our founder who personally led the charge and made it her mission to create a marketplace for the resale of overstock, open box and quality used baby gear for parents that balance’s purpose and profit.

1) What exactly does a B Corp mean and how did Rebelstork become one?

Certified B Corporations are a new kind of business that balances purpose and profit.  They carry legal requirements to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment.  B Corps are a community of leaders, driving a global movement of people using business as a force for good. Those who go through the rigorous certification process (which can take years) are pledging their commitment to their values and demonstrating to other businesses and their customers their dedication to being a values-driven business.

 2) Why was becoming B Corp so important to the Rebelstork marketplace business model?

When I set out to build Rebelstork I knew first and foremost that I wanted to build a better business, one that was transparent and different than what currently exists in the baby gear space.  I wanted to create a value-driven business but, I also wanted to have guidance along the way to help me do it. Being aligned with B Corp has allowed Rebelstork to accomplish these goals.  So, I decided to build Rebelstork alongside the B Corp principles from the very beginning, embedding their culture into our corporate structure from the start.

It was also very important to me that Rebelstork stood out during the “sustainability revolution" that is going on in the retail industry. By becoming certified, we aim to help parents be able to sort through all the environmental marketing hype out there and find legit businesses that are data certified socially and environmentally responsible.

3) Why was becoming a B Corp so important to you as a millennial start-up founder?

Starting your own company can be a lonely experience at times. Regardless of your past work experience or confidence level, there are extreme highs of success which sometimes are followed by dives of disappointment.  For me, being part of B Corp is like having a community of like-minded older siblings who are cheering you on and available to help.  Rebelstork is officially part of a bigger B Corps community all working together to create positive change and greater awareness.

4) Why do you think supporting a B Corp is important to consumers?

I think supporting a business that is legally and credibly sustainable is becoming more and more important to consumers and parents. Claiming to be sustainable and using the word in marketing is no longer being accepted by consumers who are learning to question it and expect more. As companies are pushed to become more transparent, consumers are becoming much more educated and aware of the impact in their choices.  You can see this happening in the number of large global brands that are putting resources in place to work backwards and change their current corporate cultures in hopes of acting sustainable and aligning with the B Corp guidelines.

5) What are some of your fellow B Corps that you admire?

There are so many!  Lovevery, Patagonia, Chloe, UnCommon Goods, Toms Shoes, Mama Earth Organics, Seventh Generation, Etsy, Warby Parker, Allbirds, Badger Body & Skin Care, Prose, Athleta are all top of mind!  Always great to be surrounded and inspired by such good company.
