Having fun in the sun and making memories with your family doesn’t have to end with your children going back to school. There are still plenty of beautiful days in the fall where we can enjoy outdoor play. Kristine Grant, Kids & Company’s Director of Learning Environments, has compiled a list of fall activities that you can do at home with your children to extend their learning, keep them busy, and enjoy as much time outdoors as possible while you still can!
Kristine, along with her team of educators, is responsible for shaping the education of roughly 10,000 children ages 0-5, nationwide. She is deeply familiar with developing learning opportunities that engage little minds and strengthen fine and gross motor skills!
Here are some activities to try:
Frozen Sensory Blocks
Fill an ice tray with an item of your child's choice (can be flowers, grass, glitter, Lego, or any other small toys they like to play with) then pour water into the ice tray. Freeze for 2-3 hours. Remove the ice tray from the freezer and voila! You have Frozen Sensory Blocks! As your child examines the frozen blocks, talk to them about what they have found inside. Use descriptive words to help them build their vocabulary and improve their language development.
Fizzy Sidewalk Chalk
Create your own Fizzy Sidewalk Chalk for an outdoor activity that combines science, art, imagination and fun! Grab the following ingredients and read the instructions below to get started!
- 2 cups baking soda
- 1 cup cornstarch
- Water
- Food colouring
- Vinegar
Mix together the baking soda and cornstarch. Then, add a small amount of water and stir together. Continue to add water until the consistency is close to finger paint. Next, divide the mixture and add food dye to create different vibrant colours; stir to combine. Now, add the different colours into a muffin tin or some small bowls! Once your child is finished painting, fill a squirt or squeeze bottle with vinegar and invite them to make their artwork ‘fizz’ by combining it with the baking soda mixture.
Nature Snip
Go on a scavenger hunt with your child to find a variety of items found in nature. Place all items in a shallow bin and invite your child to explore and ‘snip’ the items in the box. This activity supports fine motor and language development in an outdoor setting!
